LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND THE PRESIDENT

“We all need to expose ourselves to the winds of change,” Intel co-founder Andy Grove once said. That’s an apt description of the University City Science Center’s activities over the past year.

Between June 2015 and June 2016, we’ve created more spaces and places for people to engage with the Science Center; honed and expanded our programs to support innovation and entrepreneurship; and enhanced the way we talk about our role in Greater Philadelphia’s innovation ecosystem.

As we reflect on our activities over the past year, we also mark a milestone – the first significant expansion of our footprint in West Philadelphia in 53 years. In June 2015, we announced a strategic partnership with Wexford Science & Technology that will transform the Science Center campus. Our vision is that this will ultimately secure University City – and Greater Philadelphia – as a hub of activity for worldclass innovation.

Along with such an expansion comes a new name for the real estate side of our operations – uCity Square. As we rebrand our physical assets as uCity Square, the Science Center name endures and will refer to our operations and our work as a tech-based economic development organization.

Looking ahead, we are focusing on increasing opportunities for our neighbors, who comprise a vital and diverse community, to access the economic promise of technology and innovation.

In exploring this Annual Review, you’ll see the foundation we’ve laid, literally and figuratively, for expanded growth and initiatives for the Science Center – and our home at uCity Square.

We invite you to learn about our achievements of the last year, and our plans for the future – and the winds of change they will bring.
