Serving as a neutral meeting ground is in the Science Center’s DNA. We excel at convening the different groups that make up the Greater Philadelphia region’s innovation ecosystem. You could easily describe us as a matchmaker for innovators, entrepreneurs, funders, and the people and organizations that support them. Through programs like Quorum, RAIN and Blackstone LaunchPad Philadelphia, we help people make the connections to support their ventures, from idea to IPO.
For many members of the region’s innovation ecosystem, Quorum is their first introduction to the Science Center.
Quorum’s unique triad of resources—event space, casual work space and programming—continues to provide the foundation for entrepreneurs to meet and collaborate and, most importantly, to build a community as they grow their companies.
Between June 2014 and June 2015, more than 8,500 people attended a wide variety of programs and events in Quorum, ranging from Convening the Conveners and Philly New Tech Meetup to Philly Tech Week’s #Failfest and the Philadelphia Science Festival’s Science of Networking program.
The Quorum lounge was bustling as well with co-workers, impromptu meetings and intense networking.
No matter what brings users to the space, the serendipitous collisions it fosters are why Quorum’s unofficial tagline is “You Never Know Who You’ll Meet.”
The Sixth Annual RAIN Conference brought stakeholders from around the region to Quorum in July 2014 to discuss an audacious goal: How to make Greater Philadelphia a top innovation hub within the next five years.
RAIN, or the Regional Affinity Incubation Network, is a network of 75+ incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces and support organizations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The goal is simple: to share information, capabilities and opportunities to support entrepreneurship.
Conference participants identified four topics they believe are crucial to our region’s future success as a thriving center of entrepreneurship: retaining talent, attracting capital, navigating government and connecting large companies with small. As keynoter Christopher Wink of Technical.ly said, “Everything we do here should be to better collaborate across communities that can widen the reach of our work.”
With that inspiration in mind, we’re set for the July 2015 RAIN Conference, which will look at entrepreneurship and industry as it explores strategies to bridge gaps and create opportunities.
Blackstone LaunchPad Philadelphia earned bragging rights at the first Blackstone LaunchPad National Demo Day in New York in October 2014 when Gabe Mandujano, CEO of WashCycle Laundry and Philadelphia University LaunchPad client, beat out 19 other ventures from across the country and took home the top prize of $25,000.
Gabe is a great example of the power of Blackstone LaunchPad Philadelphia. And he’s got a lot of company. In 2014-2015, LaunchPad offices at Philadelphia University and Temple University coached a total of 390 student ventures and launched 16 companies, of which four are generating revenue. And that was before the Temple LaunchPad office officially opened its doors in January 2015!
The Science Center played a key role by connecting students in the program to Philly’s entrepreneurial ecosystem; arranging for “scholarships” to pay for registration fees for programs, including Forbes Under 30; and bringing in Steve Bowman, aka The Pitch Doctor, to coach student ventures before the Practice Pitch session that prepped Gabe for his big win.
